Guest Interview - Robin Covington

I am so excited because not only do I have a fantastic author visiting my blog today, but she also happens to be a wonderful friend. Welcome, Robin Covington!!

Yay!!!! Thanks so much for having me Scarlett – the only thing better would be a loooooong Skype chat with you. We need to plan another one.

Yes we do! I thoroughly enjoy our time together. For those who don’t know you as well as I do, Robin, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you write.

Oh – I’m from a small southern town in Virginia and I inherited the love of storytelling from my family. I learned at the knee of some of the best and I write contemporary and erotic romance. The hotter the better but I adore writing damaged people . . . so they are usually complicated.

I have a full-time job as an attorney for the Department of Defense so that keeps me busy. I have a husband of 23 years and two kiddos (14 and 12) and the most adorable Corgi named Dixie Joan Wilder.

I love comic books, red lipstick and Chris Evans. . . pretty much in that order.  LOL!

That sums you up perfectly. I so admire you because, as you mentioned, you manage to hold down a pretty hectic full-time job AND write super-sexy stories at night. What’s the secret to balancing the two?

I can run on little sleep and I don’t spend a lot of time watching TV.  I reward myself by watching a favorite show when I’m on the treadmill and I read via Audiobook for the most part. When I get home from work and do the family thing, I go into my office and write for a few hours. It’s hard but I love writing so it’s not a huge sacrifice. I also edit and write at lunch during the day and at soccer practice and scout meetings – I have my laptop with me all the time!

Did you know there is a term "sleepless elite" for those who can run on only a few hours? People like Jack Dorsey (Twitter founder) and Martha Stewart all profess to only need 4~6 hours a night. So while we are disclosing trade secrets, what is your go-to technique for getting your butt in your chair to write words when you don’t feel like it?

I don’t have a ritual because I need to be able to write anywhere. A good friend of mine was an Army Ranger and she says I write like she learned to sleep – anywhere, everywhere, and at a moment’s notice.  I can’t afford to wait for the muse to show up – I have to write everyday if I’m going to succeed – and hopefully I’ll be able to write full-time someday!

I like that analogy. When your creative well is running dry, how do you refill it? What is guaranteed to re-energize you?

Oh music. If I’m sapped, I put on a favorite album and just let it flow over me. I’m a singer and musician so I’m always inspired by music.  Lately, I’m loving Harry Styles new album and “Coconut Oil” by Lizzo.

Music is definitely one of the things we have in common. I need music in my life and in my stories. It’s no secret you have a fantastic voice! Who do you like to sing along to?

Thank you! I’ll sing anywhere and I love all kinds music but I grew up on country and its probably my favorite. I like old school Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline but I also love Miranda Lambert and Sugarland. I also sing at weddings and parties so I can handle it all from Beyonce’ to Coldplay.  I looooooove karaoke.  Seriously.

Oh my gosh - remind me to tell you one day about my epic performance in a Japanese karaoke bar when I was working there in my early twenties! I profiled well with the middle-aged business man.

I also happen to know you are a lover of comic books which makes sense seeing I think you are secretly Wonder Woman. Tell us a little about why you love them, and which comic book is your favorite?

Ha! Wonder Woman is my alter ego . . . don’t tell.  I’ve loved comic books since I was kid and I don’t really know why. I think I love the combination of great stories and illustration combined on the page. The artistry is amazing and the heroes and heroines are bigger than life.  Lately I’ve been diving into independent comics and I’m a huge fan of Iron Circus Comics and the “Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal” by E.K. Weaver. Iron Circus is run and owned by this amazing lady named Spike Troutman and she’s a dynamo of a publisher and a pioneer of women-owned comics.  And TJ and Amal is a poignant and funny and sexy tale of two men who fall in love on a road trip across the country – I adore it.

It’s date night, and one of your heroes is taking you out for the evening. Who knocks on your door and where do they take you? (For the record, I’d be hoping it was Mick Blackwell from Playing The Part and he could take me just about anywhere!)

Ha!  So, I understand why you want Mick and I pick King Nicholas from “The Prince’s Runaway Lover” (who I modeled on Chris Evans) – so we’ll go on a double date!  Sound good!  First, we’ll go to an amazing meal with LOTS of wine and an exquisite gin for you. Then it’s off to a great concert – because I know we both love music and then we would close down a bar with our hilarious stories and spellbinding personality before retiring to fabulous sex with our dates.  Sound good?

Yes... a double date with those two men sounds absolutely perfect. Completely changing direction (or not, depending on how our date night goes), let’s talk kink in romance. Why do you think it’s popularity is increasing?

I think it’s two things. First, the larger demographic of romance readers is getting older and as we get older we push our own boundaries and we test our comfort zones and that includes sexual kink. SO, as we get older, we’re adjusting what we find sexy and also how we define commitment and monogamy.  The second part is the younger romance audience is a generation growing up with all those boundaries smashed and crumbling. They don’t limit themselves, they explore sexual identity and preference with very few constraints so they are open to kink and more on the page.

That makes a lot of sense. I also think there have been some very high profile releases in the genre that have opened the doors to new readers and authors alike. Who do you think writes the best kink out there? Who are your go-to authors?

Annika Martin, Cara McKenna and Anne Calhoun are my go-to authors for kink. I love their books because the kink is everything from actual toys or power play but it is ALWAYS smart and brain-centered. The characters are not only pushing their bodies but they are also pushing the limits of their minds. Santino Hassell and Alexis Hall also explore kink in a sexy cerebral way in their books with queer characters and I gobble them up. I adore how Santino highlights the kink of open relationships and commitment.  And I also love Lexi Blake’s “Masters and Mercenaries” series – every book gets hotter.

Let’s talk about THIRD, your super-hot latest release. Can you tell us a little bit about it?

Oh Third!  Very simply it’s about a smart, woman who serves as a third in the bed of established couples. She’s not broken or damaged – she’s just kinky and she embraces it and refuses to apologize for it. She really just wants to be loved by someone who can love all of her – including her kink.  She meets Aiden and the story is about whether he’s the man who can do it.

It’s not a typical romance and it’s not a traditional HEA but I think its sexy and romantic and honest about relationships.

Thank you so much for stopping by today. It's been my pleasure to have you.
